Your habits are your destiny.
But many struggle with optimizing them.
Some even believe there is no strategy to stop a bad habit.
This is 100% false.
Here’s the easy way to quit any bad habit.
1. Remove Triggers
Every habit comes from a trigger.
- Associations (i.e. drinking alcohol -> cocaine use)
- Self-talk (i.e. victim mindset -> stress -> binge eating)
- Identity (i.e. “I am this kind of person so I do xyz”)
If you change any of these root causes, you will get a different outcome.
2. Make The Habit Less Accessible
Life is a game of friction and convenience.
You beat temptation by not having it around in the first place.
(i.e. if you don’t have junk food in your fridge, you won’t be able to eat it).
Place friction between the things you DON’T want. Make it more convenient to get the things you DO want.
And it becomes literally impossible to lose.
3. Associate With People Who Don’t Have The Habit
Peer pressure works both ways.
We mimic our social group to minimize friction.
We also subconsciously pick up behaviors of our group due to sharing energy in the same space.
(Water always finds its level).
Simply find the level you want to be at, then go there.
4. Stay In Environment Where It’s Discouraged
This is an extension of #3.
If you go places where the habit can’t exist, you won’t be able to engage in it.
In the long run, we always become our environment.
Choose wisely.
Conclusion
- Remove triggers
- Make the habit less accessible
- Associate with people who don’t have the habit
- Stay in environment where it’s discouraged
